About us
Our mission is to create a sustainable and expandable business and educational program that connects NH farms and farm products to NH classrooms and cafeterias.
Our vision is to help promote a community-based, community-supported school food community.
The NH Farm to School Program was established in 2003 as a pilot program to introduce local apples and cider into NH K-12 schools. Within three years, over half the K-12 schools in the state were purchasing them for their cafeterias! In addition to continuing with this successful program integrating apples and cider, the NH FTS is working to expand local food procurement. In 2006, NH FTS initiated a new pilot program--the Get Smart Eat Local 10 District project--to work with school districts and farms in the seacoast region of the state to work help build and strenghten direct farm-to-cafeteria relationships and introduce new local foods in the schools.
The NH FTS Program serves as a facilitator engaging farmers, distributors, food service directors, teachers, health educators and administrators in adopting farm to school practices. How do we do this? NH FTS:
- Helps negotiate simple, affordable systems for local purchasing;
- Creates and distributes support materials for schools, including flyers and posters;
- Conducts educational workshops and presentations at meetings and conferences;
- Creates and collects educational materials tailored for individual stakeholders, including nurses, teachers, parents, food service and others;
- Serves as a resource to provide information on how to integrate FTS into the school curriculum and facilitate connections.
